There’s something about the natural warmth of timber that just screams ‘homey’. No doubt, that’s why wood materials are so commonly used for producing homewares. From wooden serving bowls to wooden wall art and even laser engraved wooden tabletops, there’s a natural hominess to having some lovingly cut and carved timber elements in your home space.
Timber also happens to be one of our favourite materials for laser engraving here at Vector & Raster Laser. The two-toned burnt finish of laser engraved wood provides timeless and versatile results. And with the right laser engraving processes and wood treatments, your delightful creations can actually look their best for decades.
With our love for laser engraving wood, you can imagine that our laser engraving specialists are particularly keen to talk about today’s project spotlight, which ended up being this gorgeous custom laser engraved wood welcome sign. So why don’t we just dive straight in and unpack all that there is to love when it comes to laser engraved wooden homewares?
Our Latest Project Involving Laser Engraved Wood Homewares
Our customer supplied this beautiful solid black butt slice of timber with a lovely raw edge for today’s project. This timber slice measured at 260mm in diameter, with a thickness of 40mm, making it a treat to handle and easy to map out and centre the intended design.
Whilst they did supply the materials, the design was actually left up to us! The customer simply requested that we create a vector artwork to incorporate dog paw prints for a welcome sign that would be displayed at the front of their family home. As dog lovers ourselves, our graphic designers thoroughly enjoyed mocking up the vector art and submitting it to the customer for approval. The customer loved the paw placements we put together so we got started on this gorgeous laser engraved wood homewares project.
As you can see, the welcome sign turned out beautifully, with the raw edges of the timber complimenting the two-toned laser engraved design. Preserving the natural shape, cut, and groove of the wood also helped add to the rustic charm of this piece.
This piece will also receive some further love after being collected from us, by being oiled. The oil treatment will be guaranteed to emphasize the lovely, natural colours and highlights even further – on top of protecting the sign from dirt or degradation.

As we’ve mentioned, solid wood is a popular material for laser engraving projects. For producing custom homewares, solid wood laser engraving provides a timeless and earthy design that’s guaranteed to pair well with any interior and exterior architectural design styles.
But solid wood is so much more versatile than homewares. - Wedding placemats and decor
- Wooden jewellery
How to Care for Solid Wood Laser Engravings?
Dehydration is a concern for solid wood products as excess drying can quickly lead to cracking. This is where applications of wood oil can help lock in natural moisture and keep your solid wood laser engravings looking good as new for years and years.
Sealing surfaces is also essential for functional solid wood homewares like cutting boards, which are more likely to experience contact damage that may affect the quality of your laser engraved designs over time. You can seal your solid wood products with foodsafe epoxy or other types of sealant that are suitable for the applications or use cases of your solid wood laser engraved homewares.
Finally applying a top coat prior to using your solid wood products can also help keep them glossy for a lot longer. Make sure you reapply your top coat whenever you feel it’s necessary to keep this protective barrier as strong as possible.
