At V&R Laser, we’ve seen our fair share of laser cut wedding invitations and wedding favours – and we’ve loved them all! Regardless of the fact that laser cutting is our bread and butter, our laser cutting specialists just relish creating timeless invitations that you and your wedding guests can hold onto as a keepsake of your nuptials.
Our laser cutters have also worked with a surprising number of laser cutting materials when creating wedding invitations or save-the-dates. From plywood with intricately cut pattern work to more delicate laser cut paper designs, we’ve seen a wide range of invitation designs and constructions come through our studio doors. But you just can’t beat the classic look and feel of laser cut cardstock.
And that brings us to today’s project write-up. Stick with us as we delve into more detail about these gorgeous laser cut cardstock save-the-dates and how our laser cutting team was able to save the day!
The benefits of using laser cut cardstock for save-the-dates
When it comes to laser cutting for special events, it’s often tempting to go big for the sake of presentation. And while our laser cutting specialists do get excited about the prospect of producing laser cuttings for a retail display or for an event banner, it’s important to keep in mind that wedding invitations aren’t exactly the same as these bigger projects.
What we’re trying to say is that wedding invites are primarily functional over aesthetic – even if they are undeniably aesthetically pleasing! Your wedding save-the-dates are designed to be kept for months in advance, reminding guests to sort out work or family commitments or organise travel in the lead-up to your big day. For this reason, you’ll want wedding invitation cards that can actually be kept handy.
On that note, two of the key benefits of using laser cut cardstock for wedding invitations is that cardstock is:
- Durable enough to last the months leading up to your wedding date
- Lightweight enough that it can easily be tacked onto the fridge
And as the title of today’s project write-up suggests, laser cut cardstock is also a cost-effective material for wedding invitations, and is ideal for keeping invitation costs low for weddings on a set budget. If you’re working with a bigger guest list, sending out laser cut cardstock wedding invitations can greatly reduce your cost per head without having to sacrifice on presentation nor practicality.
What to keep in mind when laser cutting cardstock
As a laser cutting material, 450gsm cardstock is actually quite versatile and easy to work with. This material is thick enough to hold its shape well whilst still being flexible enough to suit a wide range of applications.
Here are just a few of the other projects we’ve used 450gsm laser cut cardstock for:
- Retail displays (large-scale storefront window and smaller-scale POS displays)
- Event programmes and covers
- Swing/apparel tags
- Craft projects
- Greeting cards
- Business cards
The process of laser cutting cardstock is also pretty similar to working with paper for our laser cutting specialists. Both of these materials are best processed on a lower power setting to reduce risks of burning, charring, or staining when laser cutting. Our laser cutting technicians have extensive experience working with paper, cardstock, boxboard and cardboard, ensuring that all of these more delicate materials with lower burning points are properly handled and processed to ensure the cleanest possible results with all of our laser cutting projects.
Our latest laser cut cardstock invitation project
Now, let’s get a closer look at these stunning laser cut cardstock save-the-dates made with love by our laser cutters here at Vector & Raster. These invitations actually came to us pre-printed by the client on uncut 450gsm cardstock. The client requested that our laser cutting team cut an arch shape in different sizes for each of the different invitation cards, these being the save-the-dates themselves, and then also event info cards and smaller RSVP cards.
As these three different laser cut cardstock invitations would be sent all together, it was essential that the arch shape that we were asked to cut was proportionately shaped for each of the card dimensions – all whilst keeping the back and front of all cards as clean as possible. As you can see from the finished results above, the laser cut cardstock invitations came out beautifully, with no charring or staining on either side of any invites.
But our laser cutters noticed when working with the invitations that the front and back text was actually misaligned on the invitation cards – most likely caused by a formatting error during the card printing process. Thankfully, we caught this misalignment before we even started our cutting process, and were effectively able to overcome this print misalignment by adjusting our own laser cutting process accordingly.
Suffice to say, the client was over the moon with the finished results, both because our laser cutters were able to cut the cardstock to an exceptional standard, but also because our attention to detail helped rectify the print misalignment so the cardstock invites were virtually flawless after cutting and ready to be sent out to their excited guests.
