laser engraving plywood

We’ve said it a few times over the years but we never tire of saying it, to be fair: some of our absolute favourite laser engraving projects here at Vector & Raster Laser includes working with wood materials. There’s just something so satisfying about the two-toned burnt finish of laser engraved wood.

There are also so many different types of wood that can be used for laser engraving, all delivering high-quality finishes and timeless results. For personalised gift-giving, the type of wood material you choose can even hold significance to your gift recipient.

In this case, our latest laser engraved wood project saw us engraving these gorgeous plywood box lids that you see here to accompany some matching pre-made plywood gift boxes. Let’s dive into our process on this fun and festive project.

The benefits of laser engraved plywood for personalising gifts

With its uniform density and consistent wood grains, plywood sheets are amongst some of the most popular materials used for laser engraved wood projects. Plywood typically also responds readily to both laser and even contact-based CNC engraving with little to no risks of imperfections with the right processing approach – even across highly intricate designs that demand precision. This is also why you see plywood sheets being used for a range of wood laser cutting projects, ranging from custom stencils to wooden toys.

And that brings us to another major benefit: being a wood composite material made with thin and even layers, plywood is also renowned for its versatility. You can use plywood to make furniture, homewares, and even laser cut wedding invitations and other keepsakes.

Compared to most other wood materials, plywood is also lightweight and affordable, making it a great option for designing and producing personalised gifts. For mementos like wedding save-the-dates or table settings that are typically made in batch orders, the minimal costs of plywood materials makes it an attractive choice that provides long-lasting end results without burning a hole through your pocket.

And above all, laser engraving plywood and other wood materials just produces the most beautiful results, as we’ve mentioned. The two natural wood tones of the material and the laser engraved designs just meld perfectly, making laser engraved plywood gifts a truly timeless keepsake with endless versatility.

So to sum up, here are just some of the major benefits of laser engraving plywood:

  • Plywood offers a consistent surface and texture, supporting high-quality laser engraved designs
  • Plywood is highly versatile and laser engraved plywood can be used for a range of different applications
  • Plywood is more affordable than other types of solid soft or hardwood materials

Other great laser engraving materials for gift personalisation

With plywood being one of the most affordable materials for laser engraving projects, you’re probably also wondering what other options our laser engraving specialists would recommend. If you’re a fan of the two-toned end results of wood laser engraving, then you’ll also find plenty to love about laser engraved leather creations. Similarly to laser engraved plywood, leather engravings are renowned for their durability and timeless designs. Leather is also just as versatile and hard-wearing a material as plywood, allowing it to be suitable for a wide range of applications, from leather upholstery to designer goods like shoes and bags, and even keepsakes like leather bookmarks.

There are also plenty of different metals that respond exceptionally well to laser engraving processes, including anodised aluminium, stainless steel, chrome, copper, and brass. Both laser engraved plywood and the metals outlined here are suitable for producing engraved signage for either interior and exterior installations.

Did you know that you can also laser engrave paper? Much like laser engraved plywood, laser engraving paper can produce a natural-looking finish that provides a delicate contrast with the colour of your paper materials. You can also use a wide range of paper types for laser engraving, including standard paper, cardstock, craft paper and specially designed laser engraving paper of varying thickness and dimensions.

Our latest laser engraved plywood project

So what did we love about our latest laser engraved plywood project? Well for starters, these laser engraved plywood boxes weren’t just beautiful – they were functional as well. A repeat customer of ours provided multiple lids to be engraved with the names of their grandchildren. Basically, they were looking to give their grandkids a gift they could keep for decades to come. Naturally, we wanted to do our utmost to ensure the finished results are just as durable as they are presentable.

Manufactured from 6mm plywood, these plywood boxes and matching lids came to our workshop precut, drilled, and sanded, making them pretty uniform surfaces that required minimal prep from our laser engravers.

As per all of our work with wood laser engraving here at Vector & Raster, we kept the plywood faces as clean as possible in order to minimise our customers having to do any additional cleaning themselves.

We’re happy to report that these box lids arrived back to our customers ready to gift to the grandkids. And as usual, the high-quality finish also speaks for itself here.
