It takes a lot to stand out in the world of car design, and nobody knows that more than the car companies themselves. That’s why, when unveiling a new concept car at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Buick knew that they needed to bring something special to the table. So, with the help of the Vector & Raster team, they got to work on doing just that. The Buick Avenir was a collaboration between teams across North America and Australia, and Vector & Raster were tasked with using laser etching to add some finishing touches and detailing to this beautiful machine.
Buick required laser etching across many of the Avenir’s acrylic components. This included instrument panels, switches, the gear selector, and more. As these components were going into a vehicle, each laser etching had to be legible and visible without intruding on the sleek design methodology that went into every component of the car. So, once Buick had detailed exactly what they needed, we got to work on turning their vehicular vision into a reality.
Utilising the control and intricacy of our German-made laser machines, we began etching out the designs from our graphics software. Each acrylic panel and insert we were etching on was a unique one-off, which meant that there was no room for error as we only had one shot at each. This definitely put some extra pressure on us, especially because none of the pieces were flat, leaving us with a lot of contours and angles to take into consideration.
In the end, thanks to the skill of our team and our high-powered laser engraving software, these challenges didn’t stop us from creating a flawless finished product.
